Log on to MassTimes.org 2 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 14, 2013 PASTOR'S COLUMN Dear Members of the Family of Saint Joseph, I have had the privilege to serve as pastor of Saint Joseph parish since being assigned here by Archbishop Myers on July 1, 2010. This was by no means an easy decision for I will be leaving you, the people of God whom I have come to know and love over the past years. But I believe the decision to be the right one. That is the indication that I have received from the scripture readings we have heard at Mass the past several weeks. I believe that the scripture readings assigned by the Church speak to us today; they certainly have spoken to me in this situation. During the past three years, I have done my best to preach the Word of God, to celebrate the Liturgy, to administer the church and school, to care for the parish plant, and to help the parish to move "forward in faith," as our strategic plan puts it. In my ministry here, I have been ably assisted by a wonderful parish staff and by many dedicated, faithfilled parishioners who have given of their time and talent to help serve on various councils and committees. Archbishop Myers has accepted my resignation and I look forward to being reassigned by him in the fall. The Archbishop indicated that a new pastor will be appointed in the near future so that he can begin his ministry on August 1, 2013. This will allow him time to prepare for a new year of parish and school life beginning in September. We have certainly had more meetings than ever. That is the case because I firmly believe that the Holy Spirit works when we meet with our fellow parishioners. In our interaction, conversation, and prayerful discernment, God speaks to his Church. In the next few weeks, I and the staff will all do our best to make certain there is a smooth transition from one pastor to another. Father Reilly certainly did that for me when I began and I hope to do that for my successor. During the past three years, it has become apparent that some individuals have had problems with my ministry as pastor. In light of that, Archbishop Myers and I met Friday morning, July 5, to discuss the situation here in the parish. We both reached the conclusion it would be best for me to move "forward in faith." Therefore, I have submitted my resignation as your pastor effective Wednesday, July 31, 2013. I am proud of what you and I have accomplished during the past three years. Working together, we have done good things for the Lord and for his Church. Please keep me in your prayers. Until July 31, I will continue to serve you with dedication and joy. Love, Fr. Tom Iwanowski May the United States always be a land where liberty and justice are rights enjoyed by all people, and freedom to express our faith in you is safeguarded. AN INDEPENDENCE DAY PRAYER The following benediction for our country composed by Fr. Tom Iwanowski was offered by him at the Oradell 2013 Fourth of July ceremonies at Memorial Field. Grant us the wisdom and insight to realize that the freedom and independence that is ours has not been given so that we can do what we want, but so that we can do what you ask of us so that as people, and as a nation, we can act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with you. God of all the nations, both large and small, both prosperous and struggling, both powerful and weak, both free and oppressed, we pray that you take special notice of our nation, our homeland, the United States of America. Today, as we assemble, other citizens across our great nation, from sea to shining sea, are also gathering. As proud Americans all, we celebrate the 237th birthday of the United States. Bless us, Lord, on this joyful day, may our farms be fruitful, our economy be strong, our weather be calm, our streets be safe, our land be secure, our political discourse be civil, our decisions be wise, and our actions be just. God of all the nations, bless America. Bless us all on this Fourth of July Pictured opposite marching in the Oradell 2013 Independence Day Parade are Fr. Tom Iwanowski (left) and Rabbi Paul Jacobson (right) of Temple Avodat Shalom in River Edge, who also offered a prayer . 3 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 14, 2013 'YEAR OF FAITH' MARIAN PILGRIMAGE CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF FAITH Pope John Paul II, in his apostolic exhortation, "On the Family" (Familiaris Consortio), tell us: The Christian family is called upon to take part actively and responsibly in the mission of the Church in a way that is original and specific, by placing itself, in what it is and what it does as an "intimate community of life and love," at the service of the Church and of society. a.) Does my family actively participate in the life of the Church? Does the faith of my family extend beyond the boundaries of home into the Church and the world? b.) Am I involved in my parish community? In what ways can we become involved in the life of faith and worship within the Church (children as altar servers, parents as lectors or extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion)? ....from US Conference of Catholic Bishops TO WASHINGTON, D.C.--OCTOBER 26 The Archdiocese of Newark is sponsoring a one-day pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 26, 2013. It will be led by Archbishop John J. Myers. The feature of the day will be a rosary devotion and concelebrated Mass in the Basilica. Plan to be part of this archdiocesan act of love and devotion honoring the Mother of God celebrating the 'Year of Faith.' A bus will leave from Saint Joseph Parish and return the same day. Look to future bulletins for more information or contact Pat Fakharzadeh at lom@sjcnj.org LEGION OF MARY THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER--JULY 20 All parishioners are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the 8:30 am Mass in Mary's Chapel, on Saturday, July 20. TWO POPES: TWO NEW SAINTS Become a MINISTER OF COMMUNION or ALTAR SERVER! Pope Francis has approved the cause for canonization of two previous Popes, Blessed John XXIII (shown on the left) and Blessed John Paul II (on the right). We are looking for parishioners 18 years of age or older who would like to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and adults or children (fifth grade and up) to become Altar Servers. Training will be provided here in the parish on Tuesday evening , July 30. The announcement was made on July 5, the same day as Pope Francis' first encyclical, "The Light of Faith," was released. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Fr. Tom at 201-261-0148, email him at fathertom@sjcnj.org, or speak to him after Mass. Blessed John XXII is known for his encyclical, "Pacem in Terris," and for calling the historic Second Vatican Council. The Church is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of the council during the Year of Faith. Blessed John Paul II became famous throughout the world during his 27-year papacy for his charismatic nature, his love of youth and his world travels, along with his role in the fall of communism in Europe. The beloved Polish Pope died in 2005, making his 2011 beatification one of the quickest in recent Church history. Please feel free to drop your email into our electronic suggestion box at suggestionbox@sjcnj.org 5 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 10: 25-37. In today's Gospel, Jesus is asked, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answers by saying, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself". Then Jesus was asked, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus answered by telling a story about a man who was beaten by robbers and left for dead. Two people passed by the man and kept on going down the road. Then one man from Samaria stopped, bandaged the man's wounds and took him to an inn. He took care of him for the night. When the Samaritan left, he told the owner of the inn to take care of the hurt man and he would repay the owner for any expenses when he returned. This man became known as the Good Samaritan. At the end of the story Jesus tells us that the man who treated the one who was robbed with mercy is an example of loving your neighbor as yourself. Jesus wants us to be like the Good Samaritan. We are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Today there are people who are suffering because of Superstorm Sandy or because a parent has lost a job, or for some other reason. There are many children who have no home, no clothes, not enough food to eat, and no toys. We are supposed to help them. When we do good for those who are hurting, we are like the Good Samaritan. By being a Good Samaritan, we are being like Jesus who does good things for us all! The Good Samaritan saw the hurt man as his neighbor. MISSION OF THE WEEK Things you can do to be a Good Samaritan: 1. Help carry groceries into the house for your parents. 2. Empty out closets and collect toys and unused clothes for children who do not have any toys and clothes. 3. Send a card to someone who is sick or lonely. 4. Invite someone who does not have many friends to play with you. Make that person feel welcome. 5. If someone is hurt on the playground, get them help. 6
