RESOLUTION NO. WHEREAS, on April 9, 2013, Google announced its plans to bring Google Fiber to Austin residents, building a network with Internet speeds up to one gigabit per second which is up to 100 times faster than currently available broadband access to Austin's homes; and WHEREAS, Google has agreed to provide broadband Internet services through its fiber network free of charge until 2023 to City Hall, the new Central Library, and up to 100 sites, primarily public or non-profit facilities, in the City of Austin that provide access and services directly to Austinites through what is being called the Community Connections program; and WHEREAS, under the agreement with Google, the City is responsible for creating the list of proposed sites to be included in the Community Connections program; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution 20130822-083, City Council adopted selection criteria and a process for crafting the Community Connection site list, that has been completed, with staff review and assessment completed by October 31, 2013, Community Technology and Telecommunications Commission review on November 6, 2013, and Emerging Technology and Telecommunications Council Committee site list recommendation on November 13, 2013, attached as Exhibit “A"; and WHEREAS, Council Resolution 20130822-083 identified November 21, 2013 as the date for City Council discussion and adoption of the Community Connections site list; and WHEREAS, if the Google Fiber build out does not include the selected Community Connections site area, a replacement Community Connections site will be offered; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: After considering the Emerging Technology and Telecommunications Council Committee site list recommendation, City Council adopts a Google Fiber Community Connections site list as attached in Exhibit “B”. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: In the event the Google Fiber build out does not include the area of a selected Community Connections site, the Emerging Technology and Telecommunications Council Committee will recommend a replacement Community Connections site to City Council.
