Cincinnati leads the series 49-31, although Xavier has won four of the last six games, seven of the last 11, nine of the last 14 and 11 of the last 17 meetings. XU has won five straight in the series as the home team. 2006-07 season. Xavier won the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship with a four-game sweep over UMass, Charlotte, Fordham and Saint Joseph’s. Despite being located in Cincinnati, Xavier has only played 39 games all-time there since its opening for the 197576 season, compiling a 17-22 record. LAST YEAR’S GAME AT U.S. BANK ARENA: SKYLINE CHILI TRADITION: This is the 25th straight year that the Xavier-Cincinnati game has been sponsored by Skyline Chili, the Cincinnati-based Skyline Chili that was founded in 1949 by Nicholas Lambrinides. Xavier lost to No. 11 Cincinnati 60-45 in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic at U.S. Bank Arena on Dec. 19, 2012. This marked the first time the annual rivalry game had been played at a neutral site since the 1986-87 season. Xavier’s Travis Taylor, who recorded a doubledouble with 12 points and 10 rebounds, was the only Musketeer double-figure scorer. Xavier enjoyed its largest lead of the game in the first half at 16-11 with 10:55 to go before halftime thanks to a 6-0 run that was capped off by a deep 3-pointer by Brad Redford. Xavier’s defense was a big reason why it forged a 24-22 halftime lead despite a 0-of-6 performance at the free-throw line. A 17-4 run by UC over the first seven minutes of the second half proved to be the game-changer. Xavier leading scorer Semaj Christon logged only five minutes in the second half due to cramps. Cincinnati led by 13 with 10:12 remaining, but XU mounted a 10-5 run to cut the UC advantage to 48-40 with 6:23 left. Xavier closed out the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range, and only 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the free throw line. Xavier’s defense held UC to 32.8 percent (21-of-64) shooting for the game, including 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range. Xavier outscored Cincinnati in the paint 24-22 but the Bearcats won the rebounding battle 47-37, including 20 offensive. XAVIER-UC AT U.S. BANK ARENA: This will be the 12th meeting between Xavier and Cincinnati at U.S. Bank Arena, previously known as Riverfront Coliseum. Cincinnati holds an 8-3 advantage in games played at U.S. Bank Arena. Until last season, all of those games were played between the 1975-76 and 1986-87 seasons. XAVIER AT U.S. BANK ARENA: Xavier has only played 10 games at U.S. Bank Arena (previously Riverfront Coliseum) over the last 14 seasons, although its has enjoyed some recent success down on the riverfront. Xavier has won seven of its last eight games at U.S. Bank Arena and eight of its last 10 games over the last 14 years. XU’s last win at U.S. Bank Arena was a 103-77 win over Michael Beasley and Kansas State (coached then by former UC assistant coach Frank Martin) in the 2007-08 season (12-31-07). Xavier defeated Illinois and Kansas State (coached then by former UC head coach Bob Huggins) at U.S. Bank Arena in the LOCAL TALENT HAS LED XAVIER TO SUCCESS IN THIS SERIES: Xavier fifth-year head coach Chris Mack, a 1992 Xavier University and 1988 Cincinnati St. Xavier High School graduate, has been an assistant coach (under Sean Miller), a director of basketball operations (under Skip Prosser) and a player including a team captain (under Pete Gillen) in the annual XU-UC battle in addition to four games as the Xavier head coach. The list of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area local players in the last 25 years+ that have been stars in the series include Xavier’s C.J. Anderson (’09), Josh Duncan (‘08), Justin Doellman (‘07), Brian Grant (‘94), Tyrone Hill (‘90) and Byron Larkin (‘88). One of the walk-ons, junior Tim Whelan, is also a St. Xavier High School graduate. THE COACHES: Xavier fifth-year head coach Chris Mack (Xavier ‘92) is 2-2 versus UC, while UC eighth-year head coach Mick Cronin (Cincinnati ‘97) is 3-4 versus Xavier. Mack is 97-47 (.674) as the Xavier head coach, including three NCAA Tournaments in his first four seasons, two of which ended in the Sweet 16 (2012 and 2010). Cronin is 142-101 (.584) as the UC head coach, including three NCAA Tournaments in his first seven seasons, including the 2012 Sweet 16. Junior Matt Stainbrook fought a double team and passed to a wide open junior Justin Martin for what proved to be the game-winning layup with 40 seconds left. Stainbrook finished with a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Semaj Christon led all scorers with 19 points, including 13-of-17 from the free-throw line. Six of those games are at Cintas Center and this one game is at U.S. Bank Arena. XU’s only road game during this eight-game stretch is at Alabama on Dec. 21. NEW ERA FOR XAVIER: The Xavier men’s basketball team has begun a new era in the 2013-14 season as it is now a part of the BIG EAST Conference after 18 very successful seasons as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. XU opens the BIG EAST portion of the schedule on Dec. 31 at noon against St. John’s (the first game on the new BIG EAST schedule) and the game will be nationallytelevised on FOX Sports 1. END OF AN ERA: Xavier played the last of its 18 seasons in the Atlantic 10 Conference last season. XU won at least a share of five of the last seven Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championships. Xavier entered the A-10 in the 1995-96 season after 16 years as a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League). DEE-FENSE: Xavier has held its first nine opponents to 65.2 ppg. and 40.7 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent 3-point shooting. 2013-14 game notes ALL-AMERICAN HONOR ROLL: All-America candidate and preseason First Team All-BIG EAST selection Semaj Christon has been named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week once this season by collegesportsmadness.com and was named to the fivemember BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice so far this season. Christon, who has been named on the preseason John Wooden Award and Naismith Award watch lists, was named as a 2013-14 Third Team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports preseason magazine and NBCSports.com. He is ranked as the 19th-best player in America by CBSSports.com and is a Fourth Team preseason All-America selection by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Christon, who was a member of the 2013 Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team (CollegeInsider.com), became Xavier’s first-ever Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year selection. CHRISTON IS A TEAM LEADER: All-America candidate Semaj Christon leads XU in scoring and is 10th in the BIG EAST Conference at 16.2 ppg. He is second on the team and tied for eighth in the BIG EAST Conference in assists at 4.0 apg. CHRISTON HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT OFFENSIVE FORCE: Sophomore Semaj Christon, who leads XU in scoring at 16.2 ppg., scored a team-high 22 points in the Bowling Green win on Dec. 7, including the final points in regulation and seven points in the overtime period. The 22-point game marked his eighth career 20-point game and third of the season. Christon has scored in double figures in 28 of the last 29 games, including a team-high 21 points against USC on Nov. 30. GO DEEP ... MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE TALENTED NEWCOMER CLASS: Head coach Chris Mack is getting major contributions from a talented group of five newcomers. This year’s team is much deeper than last year’s squad thanks to the influx of new talent, including 6-10 junior center Matt Stainbrook, who became eligible this season after his transfer from Western Michigan. Stainbrook, a two-year WMU starter, has averaged a team-high 8.3 rpg. to go with 10.0 ppg. in his first Xavier season. In addition to Stainbrook, Brandon Randolph, an explosive 6-1 combo guard from Inglewood (Calif.) High School, has contributed 3.1 apg. for 10 games and an impressive team-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.10-to-1.00 (third in the BIG EAST Conference). A third newcomer, 6-2 freshman guard Myles Davis, came up big in the Tennessee win on Nov. 12 with 13 points, hit five 3-pointers for 15 points on Nov. 25 vs. Abilene Christian and scored 14 points in the Bowling Green win on Dec. 7, including eight points in overtime. Jalen Reynolds, 6-9 freshman forward, had 11 rebounds versus Miami on Nov. 20 and 11 points against Morehead State on Nov. 15 and Abilene Christian on Nov. 25. Mack is also expecting big things this season from 6-6 swing man Kamall Richards from South Kent School (Conn.). STAINBROOK IS A LEADER: Junior Matt Stainbrook, one of the tri-captains, has made a major impact in his first season at Xavier. For the season Stainbrook has averaged a team-high 8.3 rpg. (third in the BIG EAST Conference) following his collegiate career-high 15-rebound game against Evansville on Dec. 10. Stainbrook has also contributed 10.0 ppg, which ranks second on the team. In addition, Stainbrook is first on the team and fourth in the BIG EAST in blocks at 1.8 bpg. and is third on the team and ninth in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage at .538. Stainbrook played his first game in a Xavier uniform in the season opener against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 8, recording a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, the first Xavier player to have a double-double in his debut since Jamel McLean in the 2008-09 season against IPFW (11-14-08). Stainbrook had 12 points and nine rebounds vs. Tennessee on Nov. 12. MUCH BETTER BY FARR: Sophomore James Farr has provided a big lift off the bench with 8.1 ppg. and 6.4 rpg. (second on the team and 12th in the BIG EAST Conference) in 16.6 minutes per game. Farr is shooting 63.5 percent (33-52) from the field for the season, which leads the team and is second in the BIG EAST Conference. Farr is second on the team and seventh in the BIG EAST in blocks at 1.2 bpg. Farr posted a career-high 15-point game on Dec. 7 vs. Bowling Green where he hit 7-of-8 from the field to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Farr had 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field to go with eight rebounds against Abilene Christian on Nov. 25 and followed that up with a game-high 10 rebounds against Iowa on Nov. 28. Farr recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds vs. Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 20. MYLES DAVIS EARNS BIG EAST HONOR: Freshman Myles Davis has been named BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week. Davis scored 14 points on the strength of 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point territory in the win over Bowling Green on Dec. 7, including a team-high eight points in the overtime period. MYLES DAVIS IS TUNING UP HIS SHOOTING TOUCH: Freshman Myles Davis, who sat out last season and suffered an injury setback in the preseason, has bounced back to score 9.9 ppg. (third on the team), including 12.5 ppg. over the last six games. Davis has hit 25 3-pointers over the first 10 games, more than triple the number of any other Musketeer (James Farr and Dee Davis with eight each). He has averaged 2.5 made 3-pointers per game, which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST, and is shooting 46.3 percent from 3-point territory, which also ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. Davis scored 14 points on the strength of 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point territory in the win over Bowling Green on Dec. 7, including a team-high eight points in the overtime period. Davis hit 4-of-8 from 3-point territory on his way to a season-high 16 points vs. USC on Nov. 30 and hit 5-of-7 3-pointers on his way 15 points in the win over Abilene Christian on Nov. 25. He had two more 3-pointers as part of his 12-point effort vs. Iowa on Nov. 28. Davis contributed 13 points in the win over Tennessee on Nov. 12. IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE MAKING A POINT: Freshman Brandon Randolph, who has started six games including the last three games, is third on the team in assists at 3.1 apg. through the first 10 games. He boasts an impressive team-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.10-to-1.00, which ranks third in the BIG EAST Conference. Randolph made his collegiate debut and his first collegiate start in the opener vs. Gardner-Webb on Nov. 8, contributing 12 points, seven assists, three rebounds, two steals and just one turnover in 36 minutes. REYNOLDS HAD CONSECUTIVE BIG EFFORTS: Jalen Reynolds, 6-9 freshman forward, had 11 points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes against Abilene Christian on Nov. 25. Reynolds had 11 rebounds and two blocks in 20 minutes in the Miami win on Nov. 20. He had 11 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes against Morehead State on Nov. 15. STENGER HOPING TO GET BACK TO ACTION SOON: Fifth-year senior Erik Stenger, who is working on his MBA at Xavier, started three of the first four games but has had to sit out the last six games due to illness. Stenger is not expected to be active for the UC game. He has contributed 5.5 ppg. and 3.5 rpg. this season. The former walk-on has earned a scholarship for the second straight season. 2013-14 game notes AMOS GETTING CLOSE TO A RETURN: Senior guard Landen Amos, who has been sidelined this season following knee surgery, is close to making a return. Amos, who played as a walk-on as a sophomore and junior, has earned a scholarship for his final semester at Xavier. Amos, a key defensive specialist last season, played in 23 games as a junior and averaged 7.6 minutes per game despite missing five games due to injury. PHILMORE BATTLING FOR POSITION: Senior Isaiah Philmore has contributed 8.6 ppg. and 3.4 rpg. and has come up big defensively as well, especially in the Tennessee win on Nov. 12. Philmore posted a seasonhigh 15-point game in the win over Bowling Green on Dec. 7. Philmore scored 12 straight Xavier points late in regulation of that game before sophomore Semaj Christon hit the two free throws to force overtime. PHILMORE EYES THE 1,000 POINT CLUB: Senior tri-captain Isaiah Philmore has scored 940 collegiate points, including 653 in two seasons at Towson University and 287 points at Xavier. HISTORY OF NCAA SUCCESS: Over the last 10 years, Xavier has made two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances (2008 and 2004) in addition to three NCAA Sweet 16 appearances (2012, 2010, 2009). Xavier is one of only 14 schools to have made at least seven NCAA Tournaments in the last eight years. PLENTY OF SUCCESS AT CINTAS CENTER: Xavier, which is in its 14th season at its beautiful on-campus home, has compiled a 180-25 (.878) record at Cintas Center. Xavier is 7-0 so far this season at Cintas Center. Xavier has an 89-12 (.881) record against non-conference teams since Cintas Center opened for the 2000-01 season. OVER TWO MILLION FANS AT CINTAS CENTER: Xavier has averaged 10,008 fans for its 205 games played so far at the 10,250seat Cintas Center since it opened for the 2000-01 season, while selling out 111 games, including the season opener against Gardner-Webb. That’s 97.6% capacity of its 10,250 seats since the building opened. Xavier passed the two million mark for men’s basketball fans at Cintas Center on Nov. 12. IMPRESSIVE GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE: The new NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for student-athletes in Division I athletics was released in October. Xavier has upheld its strong academic tradition among its student-athletes by posting a score of 97 percent, which places it tied for 12th in the nation and in the top spot in the new BIG EAST. The GSR was developed as a more accurate way to track the academic success of student-athletes. Using a six-year time frame, the GSR measures graduation rates of student-athletes. Transfer students are included in the calculation of the GSR. If a student-athlete transfers from an institution in good academic standing, then the transfers are merely passed on to the new institution. Ten current Xavier teams posted a GSR score of 100 percent, including men’s basketball. 1. 4. 12. 17. 21.
